The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) at National Cheng Kung University is the first high-ranking academic Institute in southern Taiwan whose emphasis is placed on information engineering and computing science. The CSIE Department began its operation with the establishment of MS program in August 1987, followed by the Institution of its Ph.D. program in August 1992. The undergraduate program was inaugurated in August 1997 with its later expansion from one class into two classes in August 2002. The Institute of Medical Informatics was inaugurated in 2006. In August 2011, the Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems was integrated into our department.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University has been established since 1931. It is the oldest and the most renowned mechanical engineering institutes in Taiwan. The education program emphasizes on the fundamental scientific theories, technical innovation, and practical training. The research program is focused on both fundamental mechanical sciences and engineering and inter-disciplinary topics to satisfy the needs from industries and societies. For the courses offered, besides the fundamental courses that include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, manufacturing and materials, automatic control, there are other courses related to MEMS, nano-technology, optical and photonic engineering, biomechanics, information and mechatronics, and innovative engineering offered in a regular base.

Electrical Motor Technology Research Center (EMTRC)

Electric Motor Technology Research Center (EMTRC) at National Cheng Kung University was established in 1999 as a research and service platform for advanced motor technologies. EMTRC focuses on motor design, drive and control, system integration, and the cultivation of professional research talent. Through close industry–academia collaboration, EMTRC helps companies accelerate product development, strengthen R&D capabilities, and commercialize innovative technologies. Its research covers high-efficiency motors, electric-vehicle powertrains, magnetic materials, 3D printing, motor testing, and intelligent drive systems. EMTRC also provides education, technical consultation, and shared research resources, contributing significantly to Taiwan’s motor industry and engineering talent development.
