Fraunhofer IWES in Kassel mainly researches on energy system technology for the integration of renewable energy such as wind, solar and bio energy into supply structures. The current focus is on the transformation of the German energy system. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Clemens Hoffmann, a staff of 310 scientists, engineers, non-technical staff, and students is employed at the IWES branch in Kassel. The annual budget is approximately 20 million euros. Core Competences: energy management and system design, energy meteorology and renewable resources, energy informatics, energy process technology, power grids, components and plant technics.
