The KUKA Controller Generation KR C4

Abstract

The KUKA Robot Controller KR C4 is a good example for a modern control system based on an industrial PC with just using Ethernet to interface with all sensors and actors. Due to the real-time performance and the flexibility of EtherCAT, a lot of formerly used communication technologies were replaced just by one! Beside the high speed process data exchange on multiple networks, EtherCAT features, like Safety of EtherCAT, firmware update and “hot connect” are adding further benefit to the KR C4. To automate the robot cell and to implement other enhancements, the customer may add any EtherCAT I/O device to integrated KUKA Extension Bus.
